This world, culture and society that we live in tells us how to live. This can be through advertisements, social media, books, magazines, television, or whatever. Lately, I have constantly seen these articles on my newsfeed saying "10 ways to live in your twenty's" or "Things you must do in order to be happy." I mean, seriously, the list goes on and something new shows up EVERY SINGLE DAY! It's exhausting, and all the articles contradict each other (because it is coming from the author's point of view) but they all point to the same thing- the way you should live ACCORDING to the world.
One article that has been circulating Facebook says that twentysomethings shouldn't be rich, but how much money we should be making. Since I am 22, this article immediately caught my attention. I fell for the catchy title and it lured me in, which contributed to the viewings of the article. Awesome. Anyway, I was reading the article and there was a list of what we should have enough money for and then some contrast statement following. For example- "You should have enough to eat, but never feel completely full." I actually liked this statement, because it's implying that we shouldn't be glutenous, but be grateful for what we do have. However, the list continued by saying, we should have enough money to go out and get drunk on Saturday night, but not be able to afford brunch the next day, or we should have enough to use illegal drugs, but worry about how we would be able to get the next dose (words have been changed due to inappropriateness).
Oh, so I didn't realize that this is what I should be spending my money on. As a twentysomething, this is discouraging. I want to be ENCOURAGED and MOTIVATED to get my life and finances in order (and not destroy it) before I own a home or have kids. I am almost positive that spending money at the bars and buying marijuana is not going to fit in my budget as a twentysomething. So instead of me telling you how to live your life and spend your money as a twentysomething like all these articles circulating the internet, let's look at what the Bible says about it.
Budgeting: Proverbs 27:23- "Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and attend to your herds."
If you do not know the state of your finances, be DILIGENT and find out!! If you are a 22 year old like me or 24 year old like my husband, you'll probably find out that spending money in the worldly way may not fit into your budget too well. And that's okay. I've honestly never been happier.
Debt: Ecclesiastes 5:5- "It is better not to vow than to vow and not pay."
Again, if you are about the same age as me, you probably, most likely have debt. Whether student loans, mortgage, credit cards, whatever. It is better to not go and buy that fancy new car, than to buy it and not be able to afford it. THESE ARE LIFE LESSONS, PEOPLE!!
Saving: Proverbs 21:20- "In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has."
Ouch. We have choices and freewill and when we choose on impulse or in a worldly point of view, there are consequences. You can't save your money if you are buying drugs. Period.
I love the verses and they are extremely relatable to almost any age! So go ahead, live in this world, but don't be OF this world.. Good luck, you twentysomething girl, boy, woman, man, husband, wife or whoever you are! Show this world how to live according to His WORD, not the WORLD!
