When I created this blog, I thought I would only be writing in it once a week. However, I have recently been inspired and moved to create another entry right away!
On Thursday, July 24, the HUGE, and I mean most talked about of the female population, movie trailer of "Fifty Shades of Grey" was released. Knowing only a few things about the book, I decided to look up a brief summary of it knowing that I would not ever read the book nor watch the movie. Two terms that were tagged with the film were "dominance" and "submission" which is exactly what most people have and will describe the book to be. If you haven't seen the trailer, it is very racy and inappropriate for television in general; however, what movie isn't these days? It almost seems as though if the show/movie isn't filled with inappropriate behavior, there is continuous swearing throughout the entire program. I've even felt convicted for some of the TV shows I used to watch and just stopped watching them all together, and I prayed for the desire to not watch it! So, it's not just "Fifty Shades of Grey," but almost all entertainment.
So, where am I going with this? How does this relate to women who are engaged to be married or just women in general? Well, being exposed to these types of ideas of the worldly views of sex/love/marriage skews the absolutely perfect and intended plan for what God has given us women in a marriage. I hear WAY too often from women "I don't believe women have to be submissive. That's so domestic and traditional. The world has changed and I am a woman, not a slave." Interesting. I bet this is the same person who owns all 3 of the Fifty Shades series...
Media, books, television, magazines have altered what Paul says in Ephesians 5:22-24 "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as YOU DO THE LORD. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything" (by the way, I will be using Ephesians a lot for many references- it's just that GOOD). The true definition of being submissive is to be willing to follow her husband in her husband's leadership in Christ. If I was not submissive to my husband, I would not be in Pennsylvania, involved in an amazing church, nor be as happy as I am now (which is truly the happiest I have ever been). Being submissive is not a bad thing!! Do you think it is a bad thing to be submissive to the Lord. NO WAY! A counterargument to this may be... "Why should the wife be the only one who is submissive?" Well, Ephesians 5:21(just before God's command to the wife) says "Submit to one another OUT OF REVERENCE FOR CHRIST." We aren't submissive to make our husband happy or to get a pat on the back, but to please the Lord. That's it. That's all and that is a good enough reason.
Honestly, I can understand why women are turned away from submission and have a twisted idea of what the word means, but it is because the WORLD has influenced our thinking in so many ways. I also understand that these books, shows, movies have all been made for entertainment, but it has truly given us a perspective on love and marriage that is false, ungodly and just wrong. If you are a woman who is struggling with this idea of submission, I will pray for you. You not a slave to anyone, but should desire to be a servant to all, including the Lord and your husband. And with anything you do, do it for the Lord.
